Thank you...I've read Blood Meridian, before Lonesome Dove actually. It is an excellent book, but it's so dark as to be almost anti-Western. What I love most about Lonesome Dove is the characters, who seem both very genuine and larger-than-life at the same time, even the auxilliary characters.
I think Blood Meridian contains some of the finest use of the English language I have ever read.. but All the Pretty Horses is a better western.
I would say that All the Pretty Horses is better than this and doesn't fall into the genre tropes of romanticizing the old west...
The border crossing trilogy by Cormac McCarthy is a similar vibe but I think is better.
