Ted Just to add on that. I don't know if this was Everett's intention or now, but in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck wrestles with the idea that he has committed the sin of theft by taking Jim with him on his adventures. At one point he has a fight with Jim and believes that by being friends with Jim that he is choosing hell over heaven. As he works up the nerve to apologize to Jim, he thinks something like "All right then, I'm going to hell." and then apologizes to Jim for his actions. When I read the acknowledgements, I wondered if Everett was thinking of that.
