Agreed! My 14 y/o son is reading this for 9th grade English, so I read it as well. He was turned off at the beginning of the book about the description of Junior's brain health and the sick dog, and he wanted to know why anyone would write about such things. What a great opportunity to talk about the importance of expanding his world view through literature. Junior isn't perfect, but life is messy for everyone. After that, he's loved the book. i think 9th grade is a perfect age for this book, and I can't wait until my son finishes it so we can talk about the themes of loss, hope, heritage, friendship, and independence.
Rated pg-13? I think, no I know it is rated R. R! R! R!
All the language in the book and the sexual situations, this book is a big no, no for younger kids. This book has the same situations as a rated R movie.
