Thanks for responding Jane, and I’m basically being a pedant! I read a great deal, 3 or 4 books a week, lots of indie authors and it’s a recurring question, I get so frustrated. However, your explanation of your personal life makes sense, but I hate the erosion of our language. I now live in North West Wales and am learning Welsh, so I support all languages (I also speak French). I’m sad the Americans think they are spelling mistakes and have to be pandered to.
A lot of British readers feel the same way, believe me. But the thing is, we exported our language worldwide, and our version of it is just one of many. I speak French too, and how funny — I am currently learning Welsh! Only on Duolingo, and it's South Walian rather than North. I've only ever been to Wales once, but it suddenly occurred to me that it was ridiculous to live on an island where two other languages are spoken and not even to know the basics of either of them. Once I have worked through Welsh I will start on Scots Gaelic, and then Irish, and I will hopefully end up understanding these wonderfully rich (in history and culture) islands better.
