I think Roxy told Erin a version of the truth that protected them. When Erin wakes from her coma, she can't remember what happened, and Roxy promises to tell her. Erin believes what Roxy tells her, and repeats that on the podcast.

I agree, Erin & Roxy were both troubled kids & their interviews sounded totally contrived.
