I think the role of the black dog is showing she has the sight her aunt and brother have and not that she is killed or shot. Dickie sees two people when he is about to shoot and gets on his knees, it doesn't seem to show he can see Imedla running. I also think that PJ has a touch of the sight because he senses doom and before being shot he apologises to his sister, to right a wrong. Also the pet cemetery narrative he starts to bring up, the fact the son is killed there, the youngest I think is a foreshadow too. Throughout the whole book I felt poor PJ was narrowly escaping death and even the child kidnapper seemed like such a boogeyman grim reaper type with his long black clothing and hair. I believe Cass also seems him too in the bookshop buying children's books maybe also a foreshadow.
Rose saw the black dog and Lar saw the black dog and they didn't die. When Rose saw the dog she told the boys in the kitcehn it seemed to be looking for them, asking was it theirs. When Kar saw it he searched out Rose to ask her about it and found she had a stroke.
I agree with foreshadowed death but it also showed that some of the family had the sight and were aware of death but that it was not always their own
