Jan Johnson I'm glad I'm not alone!

judith I just don't trust Walter. It's twisted that he would tolerate the stench in there every night just to go in & watch her gaming?

message 3: by Jan (new)

Jan Johnson Good point! Love the book but just think this is a weird thing that should have been left out if it wasn't going to be explained.

message 4: by judith (new)

judith right, Josie kept saying she was going to go in there, & I kept waiting for it, but she never did. It just upped the creep factor.

message 5: by Jan (new)

Jan Johnson Yes, me too! Really odd that plot device never got explained!

message 6: by judith (new)

judith Just like that child's chair with the restraints, it was referred to several times, & Erin was found in it at the end, but why did they have a thing like that? What was its purpose in the family thru the years, & why didn't the girls mention it in their interviews?

message 7: by Ellen (new)

Ellen I was going to post the same question about the smell. If it was that bad, how could Walter tolerate spending so much time in there? I started to wonder if Josie was just imagining that there was a smell?

message 8: by judith (new)

judith Good point! If you believe Walter's a good guy, then there's probably no real smell. Josie may imagine it because of the vile, rotten things she thinks are going on in there every night, but won't make herself open the door to face it. We know that Josie's an unreliable narrator, but some of what she says may still be true!

Flighty_Z I think the gaming buddy thing was prob legit as it’s super easy to disprove. From the audience who watched Erin’s gaming and then the wider Netflix / police attention afterward, if there was no “pops” character it would have been called out by multiple people ? Just my thoughts!

message 10: by judith (new)

judith You're right, the gaming community was familiar with "pops" (presumably Walter) on Erin's site, but it's still hard to sort out the truth...somehow, the interviews just didn't ring true for me, & I never trusted Walter!

message 11: by Flighty_Z (new)

Flighty_Z Yeah Walter definitely seemed dodgy! On one hand I think he was just a naive and easily led man, but on the other - he ended up with a 16 year old, so ..

message 12: by judith (new)

judith Bottom line...being "naive & easily led" isn't a factor in the case of an adult & a minor. The adult is always at fault & it's called being a sexual predator!

message 13: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Johnstone Its important to remember that Erin is Autistic. Showering and hygiene may be sensory no-go's for her and without parents who actively support her and seek appropriate interventions to help her, she was just left to it. I don't think Walter was inappropriate with her but I think he was negligent.

message 14: by judith (new)

judith Who said Erin is autistic?

message 15: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn In chapter 35 there’s a Netflix title that says “Erin Fair was recently diagnosed as having ASD.”

message 16: by judith (new)

judith Again, referring to the title we don't know what's true or what's going on in Erin's room, if anything! Josie may be imagining it.

Erika GV I mean, the dad was on camera while Erin was playing some, some of that argument was true.
