Marla Your observation makes a case for it. It provides reasonable doubt, but I think she did go through with the abortion, the nurse holding her hand through it.

Lydia Interesting!!! I did not understand why Emily had such an obsession with Duke. Maybe because Lara let the doubt happen.

message 3: by K (new)

K No, that’s rewriting the book. The book literally says “And there will be no talk of our meeting again at that theater, about the YEARS spent dating, living together, deciding to marry, moving to Michigan.”

message 4: by judith (new)

judith Agree! The timeline doesn't work for Duke to be Emily's father.

message 5: by Susan (new)

Susan The reference to the young being able to change their mind is Lara expressing her hope that Emily will change her mind about not having children, and thus being able to carry on the family tradition of working the farm.

message 6: by judith (new)

judith That's correct. Joe & Lara dated too long for Duke to be is Emily's father, Lara had "no regrets" about the abortion & that is the only secret she always kept.

Deborah What abortion? Where did I miss this?

message 8: by judith (new)

judith It happened 6 weeks after Lara had unprotected sex with Duke. She didn't use the words "pregnant" or "abortion," but the way she described her experiences it was apparent what took place. This part of her story was fuzzy, you had to put it together.

message 9: by Farah (new)

Farah Osman She also says in her narrative that Emily has always was Joe’s. She sites how they stand, walk etc.

message 10: by judith (new)

judith Yes, that too, but the main thing is the timeline...Lara & Joe dated & lived together a long time before they got married, & there was no child in the picture. Couldn't have been Duke's.
