judith Duke was a wildly charismatic figure there in that closed environment & he always got his way! She lost herself in him & didn't even know who she was by the time she left.

Jud Yeah, but she figured him out and moved on after the summer was over, realized who he was, and excepted how he betrayed her. I just don’t buy that she would come to his psychiatric hospital at all, let alone allow herself to be used in just about the most degrading way possible.

Mary Berger Excellent points!

judith She hadn't really moved on. She said she was waiting for him to call, so when he did she went because she wanted to see him again, maybe hoping for closure. (Don't forget, she had already allowed herself to be "used" by him the whole summer.)

Nancy C This was a coming of age story. Her time at Tom Lake was both magical and painful. Youth often is. While the scene at the psych ward was hard to read Lara grew from that mistake. She learned, made a good life for herself, and was able to forgive. Despite that episode Lara came out the winner in the long run.

judith Well said! This bizarre turn of events catapulted her into adulthood.
