the murders actually happened! from my understanding, Pearl is still Rebecca's daughter, and Rebecca was still murdered in Castine. it seems like she wrote The Sound and the Dagger, in addition to Wilder, Harper, Nat, and Sky's story, as a coping mechanism? very metafiction
lol I am just as confused. Who is Pearl, who is hele, Sky is a man, Sky is a woman lol. A book inside a book inside a book inside a book lol. What is going on? Who exactly killed Rebecca??
Was Rebecca real or fictional? Or was she real, and also a ghost? Or was she real and the ghost was fictional? Q's within Q's, for books within books !
So, its meant to be very confusing, but Rebecca was real, she was Pearls mother. She was killed by the Dagger man, Alton Pelletier. Ghost Rebecca is fake, she was a character in the book that Pearl wrote from the POV of Wilder, as a response to The Sound and the Dagger. Pearl wrote both Sound and the Dagger (which she took from Wilder in college) and Wilder's response to it (since he died shortly after his book was stolen. All the stuff about him being married and a teacher was created by Pearl to make her better about stealing from him and "causing" his death even though it was really Harper that killed him [accidentally]).
