Growth? She hiked. That's it. There's no redemption in hiking. She destroyed people on her downward spiral and never asked for forgiveness, never appreciated what she truly did to other people. The "journey" was on a trail, not on her pathetic soul. Losing your mother is awful. You don't destroy others because of it, and hope that a hike will wash away your sins. She never atoned for her mistakes. Writing them down, confessing how awful she was does not get her off the hook. Being remorseful is the first step. A step she never took on her self-indulgent hike. God, so eye-rolling.
What, exactly, should she have done to atone for her mistakes? Writing them down, admitting that she was wrong, that she did horrible things - what else could she do? Should she throw herself at her husband's feet and beg for his forgiveness? It seems obvious from their interactions long after their divorce that he had forgiven her and they had a good relationship. I saw plenty of remorse in the book I read. What book did you read? I will admit I have absolutely no fondness for Cheryl, I think anyone who did what she did, regardless of motivation, is not a good person - BUT I can also see the changes in her and the insight she gained by being ALONE in the wilderness while she hiked the PCT. The point is not the hiking. The point is the self-examination, the insights into one's own actions and psyche that one gains under such circumstances.
It's not that SHE changed her name. It's that it makes no sense that her two siblings now SHARE that name.
Because when you change your name your siblings don't get your name. Also there is 0 redemption arc or personal growth in this story. She starts out an awful person with a mediocre American life and ends exactly as the same awful person with an even worse life. She never saw the wrongs in her ways. She never really came to terms with anything. She didn't seem to learn anything about hiking and from the reading it sounds like she bused and hitchhiked a significant portion of what would have been the hike in the first place.
Feat of Endurance?? She skipped HALF THE DAMN TRAIL? Did you even read the book? Do you know anything about hiking??? Give credit to those unsung people who actually walk the miles and not some yellow-blazer you worship because you dream of having her completely fake "party all the time" experience, written about in this butt-wiper.
