Citizen Some suffering. Someone who actively seeks ways not to harm other people can deserve some sympathy. Not the case in this book

Betty Davis Well Nabokov didn’t actively seek to harm anyone. And as it is a work of fiction I can try to see a different perspective and feel sympathy for the struggle they love with. It is a perversion. Yes it is ultimately up to them to not act on it. But the person is still denying a living feeling part of themselves and it cannot be easy

Citizen Sorry. I reread your first comment.

My boiling blood probably didn't let me see the quotes in the first case of "suffering" haha

You've touched on an interesting subject of some people having to live with their perversions. (I just believe that this book is a wrong tool to accomplish anything good). It' a real problem that society doesn't want to face. So many pedophiles want to seek help which is too often not available. Some of them can be good people who would do anything just not to harm a child. But they don't get sympathy or help while someone like HH (be it a fictional character) does because of the genius of Nabokov. I don't say that you sympathize with HH but some people clearly do thanks to the genius of Nabokov.

I just have such a visceral reaction to this book and have a huge problem with its popularity.

I believe that it might do more harm than good to society. I have a problem giving the voice to a monster like that. There are so many more people who are so much more deserving to have a voice and are never heard. And in this story, it's Lolita who had to be given the voice at least a little.

I believe that the common denominator is too low for this book to be of any benefit to society. Just read some of the comments and reviews. Some people find this book erotic. Some call it a love story. Even if HH was not a pedophile he is clearly not capable of love nor does he understand the concept. Some people even blame Lolita

And this site is where people who read a lot congregate. So you can imagine that the views, in general, are even worse than expressed on this site.

Betty Davis I do see your point and I get it. Of course, I more than just sympathize with Lolita. Her situation is beyond any comprehension. The damage that was done, nay, the destruction of her life is beyond reparations and it would take a super-person to be able to rise above.

But, I do disagree with you with regards to HH. I do think he is to be sympathized. Maybe it is as you say, due to Nabakov’s genius. But beyond that without giving a voice to these people who are torn with these desires that are against society and to me against every moral code. And I am a very free spirited and open person but the line in the sand is—forcing someone against their will. And HH created a situation whereby Lolita had absolutely no option.

But I digress.

The point is that without giving a voice to their inner dialogue, their strife within... We will never be able to come to a solution.

And honey, my solution is literally to castrate them. After this book I realized that a person who suffers from a perverse sexual attraction that is a danger to others, such as HH, will never be at peace. He or she will always be a danger and be in a state of imbalance. The only way to stop this at the root would be to remove him of his libido. And the only way to do that would be to castrate him.

So I hope I didn’t shock you to much with this! But my point being that I do feel sympathy for HH and I do see the impossibility of his situation. I couldn’t imagine living with such a deep desire that I KNOW I cannot fulfill!?!? This is the definition of torture. And this book made me realize the futility of the situation and how really, to my eyes, there is only one solution. Or maybe you are right, maybe there should be more support, but would people have the courage to go seek it...?

Nice chatting

Bruzote Betty Davis, castration does not always change the behavior of people. To begin with, they can take hormones. I look at pedos like sharks. They were born to do what they want to do. But if there is a Great White Shark in the swimming area and there is a choice between letting him swim freely or not, I'm not letting him swim free. I will attempt to control his choices.

Betty Davis Yes actually it does. The numbers show. There are countries that castrate as punishment. And their repeat rate is near zero.
