No, it's not as much about liking, which most of us want in a book, as in being confronted with truth about life as it can be and is, which most of us want to avoid knowing.
True, everyone seeks a happy ending, in books and in life.
Maybe that is why we are so drawn to books. The happy ending is so accessible.
I can't imagine my life without a book in it. I am now reading "Of Human Bondage" and so far so good.
