Today's my first day on this site. I finished this book long ago and just heard a discussion group on the radio today and was looking for someone's impression of what happened to Nathan with no success. So much focus on Lydia...and came across your review, which is EXACTLY what I thought happened. Jack becomes an astronaut...I remember something about him looking down on the earth from space, and falls in love with Jack, something about wanting to trace that bump on his nose and feeling bad about how it got there.
I'm glad you thought that Jack and Nath ended up together. I read that too... Nath wanted to touch the bump on Jack's nose... that sounds like they are together...
I took that line about Jack's nose the same way. I then also assumed it is why he and his father had such issues - the Dad must've known and not approved.
Since the boys have graduated school and Nath is off to Harvard, I believe they end up together as well. They would have no other reason to still be in contact.
Good explanation! In the end, I think everyone accepts that her final moments and intent will in many ways be a mystery, no one takes blame, but each understands (or at least intuits) their culpability. Everyone seems to be more respectful of "How Fragile We Are" (Sting) and appreciative of each other.
Hannah's going to end up trying to save/rescue and "fix" people, which will not go well for anyone. I do hope Jack and Nathan end up together, or at least exploring that.
Yes, agree with others that Nath and Jack are together which is why Nath is looking back at Jack and the comment about wanting to touch the bump on his nose that Nath caused solidified to me that they are together. It was so subtle but so there! I had to go back and read it twice to confirm my suspicion.
