Wrenegade I read this quite some time ago, but I strongly remember when the author and siblings decided to dig the foundations for the glass castle themselves, only to find later that the parents had used it for a garbage pit. Anyone else remember this?

F Perfect metaphor: build their kids hope's up on dreams, make them work hard for it, and then absolutely trash it.

Lucy Broken promises. Perfect answer.

Mikayla In the beginning of the book Rex says that he is going to build the family a 'glass castle', and that that was his major plan to get them out of the destitute cycle they were living. It symbolizes child-like hope and fantasies, and shows the maturity and truth of her parents.
