I disagree - they are humans. I think they do not contemplate leaving because to them it is inconceivable. It was not what they were taught. They have no way to even think of such a thing as escape. People know what they are taught to believe. It happens all the time. Children raised in churches believe in God often without any thought about it. People often share the politics of their parents, and on and on and that is in a world where people are encouraged to think for themselves! Imagine if you were never encouraged to think for yourself. You would likely accept your fate and possibly even take pride in doing what has been taught to you as the "right thing" or noble thing. Think of suicide bombers - I value my life too much to even consider such a thing but people make that decision all the time because to them it is the right thing to do - the most noble, etc.
