Judith Maybe Jarret's talent with horses is recognized, but he is not respected as a human being. "Black privilege" was an illusion & could be yanked away in a heartbeat...then, as now.

Marla This is a very good observation, a terrific answer to the question asked. I have to add, I felt that Theo's murder was random gratuitous violence, unnecessary to the story & ruined the book for me. My humble opinion.

Corinne I agree. I saw no purpose in Theo's death. One of the main characters being killed at the end of a story seems pointless.

Candy At first I did not like the fact that Theo was killed. It did indeed seem pointless and senseless. But then I thought, maybe that was the point. There are too many senseless killings of young black men in the US today and racism is still prevalent. It’s not meant to be a feel good, happily ever after ending.
