Yes, I thought that Maurice was very interesting. At the end of the book the narrator says that nobody is worried or interested in what Maurice (as a child) is up to, which could explain why he turned out so unpleasant, as if nobody even cares. And somewhere else she says that Maurice played with all the boys, not taking into account if the boys were beneath his status, which sounds out of character with how he turns out. I think he is a much more complex character and I would have liked to know more about him.
Agreed - but one of the things I took away from Life and Atkinson's Scenes Museum is that sometimes, for maybe no real reason we don't get on with our family (or maybe I'm relating?)
There are people who are just not interested or attune to other people’s feelings, most of the other siblings are acutely sensitive, which is just as well considering how reticent they are at frank conversations. Maurice does particularly well in hierarchical organisations being out for number one which is the author’s thrust at what it takes to succeed in conservative Britain.
