Chal Some people have horrible things that have happened to them or are currently still experiencing. Most people want to read for pleasure; it's entirely reasonable that someone with a lot going on would not want to relieve those memories/experiences through a fictional book.

Also, people are allowed to have preferences! I'd rather not read books where there's animal cruelty. No need for judgement.

Kelland Hutchence I do see your point. As for animal cruelty I entirely agree, however, having been an avid reader fo 70+ years I can honestly say that I have never yet read any fiction that contains animal cruelty.

Shalewa Excellent point Chal. I prefer not to read books that deal with abuse towards children. That is my preference and I shouldn’t be judged for asking questions that help me decide to read or not read a book based on MY preferences. And by the way, I read the Bible daily and as a result it impacts greatly what I choose to read. I don’t consider that “sad”.

Judith Anything can trigger anyone! But by all means, stick to your preferences, but avoid adult literature & just skip some of the best books, like this one.

message 5: by Kay (new)

Kay Traska Some people may be trying to help their teens begin to move past YA fiction into adult fiction. I know my own teens prefer not to read books with graphic sex, not because they are not aware of it, but because that is not something they are interested in or comfortable reading about. I think it's a good question to ask.

message 6: by Judith (new)

Judith In that case, maybe just ask for input on age-rating or if it's suitable for teens, rather than ask for specifics? Also, a Q like this should just be answered Yes or No, no one needs to list all the graphic scenes in the answer!

message 7: by Claire (new)

Claire Some people may not want to trigger past experiences in their own lives.

message 8: by Judith (new)

Judith Uhm, we've established that. We're discussing how questions like this & their detailed answers impact discussions of adult literature.

message 9: by Claire (new)

Claire Wow that’s so clever of you. Clever!

message 10: by Judith (new)

Judith Huh?? (this whole thread has been about "triggers.")

message 11: by Claire (new)

Claire You’re so great at explaining things. Amazing!

message 12: by Judith (new)

Judith Still huh?? But whatever.

message 13: by Claire (new)

Claire Yeah. Exactly!

message 14: by Josiah (new)

Josiah i think most of the time people ask this is because they have kids/teens who want to read it.

message 15: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra Bailey My husband is uncomfortable with me reading explicit smut books due to past occurrences in our relationship. Out of respect for him and our marriage, I try to just stay away from them. So I always ask or look for other people who have asked.

message 16: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Lennon Or they’re people who have gone through trauma that you’re fortunate enough not to understand. I’m actually more sad for people like you who have such a small life that you’re belittling someone for their own personal reading taste and discomfort, once again probably because they went through real trauma. It must be nice to just read about these topics from a safe, cozy distance.
