The best advice I've ever heard was: "there are thousands of aspiring writing out there, struggling to write their first book. And I wish most of them wouldn't, Because most are deemed to fail !
I think that's a matter of perspective, Edgar. If an aspiring writer's goal is to hit number one on the NYT Best Seller List and sell a couple of million books the first time out of the box, then yes, they're almost certainly doomed to fail. If their expectations are more modest, maybe not. For at least some people, I suppose, simply the act of finishing a book is a success in and of itself, even if it is never published.
