Sally's the token female in this book who takes care of people, gets things done, & keeps a level head, unappreciated by the men wrapped up in their madcap antics. Her purpose is to show that Emmett's a fool, rejecting her & thinking he can raise Billy alone. She loves them & they need her, but she shows a woman's strength in deciding to flee with them & take whatever new life awaits.
