That has been a hard and fast rule for me in general. Luckily, LOTR was complete when it arrived in America in paperback while I was a college freshman( 1964-65) but there is always rereading... Generally the first time, I'm reading to see what will happen next. Which can mean, gasp missing vital information. So while waiting for The Doors of Stone, rereading more slowly, savoring word choice and NO DOUBT discovering seeds Patrick has tossed out along the way. They are growing now, and when we get the 3rd volume, at some point they will be awaiting our eye, or linger in the shadows until a second or third reading.
But if everyone waited, then it would appear to the author that there was no demand for their work. Go ahead and read series that are only partway in. If they are good enough that you'll wait 2-3 years (or longer ... GoT looking at you) for a sequel, then the series is worth the reread when it comes out.
That being said, this was posted a year before I responded and it still doesn't look like there is an answer lol
Bless us with your prose O Bearded One!
You are partially right.
But it's also nice to enjoy the forums and reddits about the series, you will feel part of a community seeking and making up theories..
Considering how delectable the writing, I honestly am ok with the wait. He's that good. I've re-read the existing books a few times and each time a turn of phrase takes my breath away. Part of me doesn't want it to end
Since I am a binge reader, I must wait until the series is done before starting again but I do look forward to that. I don't mind the discussion on what the 3rd book may be like. What bothered me was the attack waged on a person asking a very reasonable question. I prefer a book not be released until the author is satisfied with what they have produced. That does not mean that I don't really appreciate being kept updated on the status of a book.
I recommended these books to my sister. She read the first two in a few days. Called me up furious. 'How dare you send me to these books when I now have to wait years to read the last one'. Sorry Sis.
OMG I have this rule for years but now it's too late... I started reading the name of wing thinking it is solo, than just now finding out it's not fucking finished. I don't know what to do... I am halfway through the first and I can't stop.
The writing is wonderful and though the books leave you with an unfinished feeling they are still so well written that I would say go ahead and read what is available if you have already started. If you have NOT started, I would recommend that you wait until the third one is finished and read the reviews.
.
In my opinion, The time to release is too much, I'm waiting since 2011 so 7 years ago soon and the same time Patrick is gonna wait I buy doors of stone in case finally I do it because it seems he is following the same way of RR Martin.... endless
I should add that any book which is not a stand alone book should forewarn the reader that it is part of a series. I just got hit again with one of these where the book appears to be not part of a series, ends in a cliff hanger and the author has left it at that for over 4 years. I like that author but this one may have permanently turned me off of her.
Thats not a great lesson. Brandon sanderson and his magnificent stormlight archive is an unfinished series but brandon is a dedicated author that releases without delay and releases absolutely stunning content. The lesson here should be chose the author you want to follow prospectively if he respects you. Otherwise do it restrospectively
Stormlight Archive is a series within a larger series known as the Cosmere. If you factor in all those books together,
even if you don't pay attention to his other books that aren't in the Cosmere, he actually writes and publishes like a speed demon.
I would argue it depends on the author. Brandon Sanderson, for example, isn't going to leave us hanging.
For me the formula is simple now.
1) Is it fantasy?
2) Does the author own a beard?
3) Is their name something other than Brandon Sanderson?
4) Is it part of a series.
5) Is the series incomplete?
6) Have they not yet completed any series?
If the answer to all of the above is yes, I'll buy the book when they are dead. Maybe.
Sanderson has earned the benefit of the doubt by being a writing machine.
I've been waiting to start this series for almost 2 years lol. I don't need the third one to be done, just tell me it will be done in the next year for sure and I'll dive in. God bless Sanderson, but that man is either 4 people, or he's a straight up psychopath to be able to churn out the amount of content he does. It's incredible, and other authors probably tell him they hate him for it.
If no one buys the first or second book, and just silently waiting for the the author to finish the series, there might not be a third one. If a book doesn't do well, there might not be any reason for the publishers to publish it, and no reason for the author to spend time one something he has no reason to expect anyone will read.
That is certainly a problem but there will always be people who are willing to take that chance. I am no longer one of those. I will buy the beginning of a series if I trust the author but I am done with these teaser books which publishers are now pushing in a big way. They are not satisfying one book reads. They are in fact not even what I would consider a book but more an introduction to a book. I completely enjoyed Rothfuss' "The Slow Regard of Silent Things". It stood by itself and was an enjoyable story. The writing on the Kingkiller Chronicle was beautiful but the books do not stand on their own and are not satisfying as a single read. Again it has the feel of a teaser about it and I do not care for such books. I stopped reading Robert Jordan when he started milking the public on a never ending story. This is a matter of personal choice. Many people love living in a world that never comes to an end. I am not one of those.
I cannot believe that this is still a comment that gets likes and comments. I was reading recently that this story line was advertised as a finished trilogy in 2000. Almost 20 years later the author says he is working on it. I can see why he is frozen and unable to follow through. The writing is excellent but NO story is worth 20 years.
yep. But I trust Brandon... the rest is a now dow... Think the GoT will come out at all or did the tv-series end it? It would be very disappointing if it did.. still want to know about some of the characters that wasn't even in the tv-series!
So what are the chances that with COVID limiting conventions and other distractions that we might see this book before 2020 is gone? Of course being part of 2020 might not be a good thing....
I am re-reading Brandon Sanderson's books starting with his collection of short stories Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection
The Stormlight Archive, Book 2.5. I absolutely love the first story in the collection and for the first time don't want it enlarged because I like it so much and want it to remain as it is in my memory.
This to me is my greatest problem with KKC. How many other authors are going to suffer as a consequence of Pat's handling of this series? How many readers like yourself are choosing to pass on an unfinished series, simply because they've been burned by Rothfuss/GRRM? It's damaging to the Fantasy industry as a whole.
Part of the problem is that publishers are now pushing for series on books that really should be a single book. I have no problem with Authors being pushed into writing stand alone books until they have proved their ability to do the work required for a series. Some of the series being written now are no better than a book of a few chapters with no conclusion at all. I will never again start a series by an unproven author.
I would have to disagree with you as Patrick is the only author in a series I've read that did this to their fans. Otherwise I would have missed out on The Wheel of Time back in my youth. Don't let 1 author's bad discourage you to read other gems. Fast for 5 years I only came back here to comment because while I was browsing a gaming discord there was a user named Kvothe and I thought oh yeah! I wonder if Patrick had finished his book lolololol. Thank god I stopped anticipating his book years ago while he was still actively chatting in Goodreads (think when Jim butcher started his corsair series). You can tell the guy either has writer's block or only wanted to cash in on his then current fame going to conventions blog etc doing everything other than writing a book.

Yes i actually agree with the lesson you have learned , i try to find book series completely published
