Ruth Fuller The clotheslines show up often in the book. It is mentioned with the dog, the mule, it is where Michael goes to think and grieve, and it is the last thing Penny sees before dying. there are probably more instances than that, but I just got done and haven't re-read it yet to look closer. A clothespin keeps the item in place and steadies and supports it in an effort to make it better (clean). Maybe that is how Clay thought of Penny
