Marion Duchess is the only one of the four boys that did nothing wrong to land in jail. He has survived by his wits and that leaves some rough spots on him. He may have made choices I don't approve of, but I can understand where his motivation came from. I know, I for one, have lived a posh live compared to Duchess. That makes a difference - a big difference.

Connie Schuchard The boat was going to sink anyway. Dutchess had no way to get back to land. Did Emmett find a indirect way of killing him? Did Emmett feel that their lives were threatened by Dutchess and they would never be free of him?

Peg Cathy, that was my feeling. Duchess was all about the money right up to the end. He didn't care who got hurt in the process, he had to get the money.

Karen The boat wasn't going to sink anyway. Emmett put rocks in the back to make sure the hole in the boat was above the water. He was just trying to delay Dutchess while they got away.

Bonny Gable I agree with Cathy, and I think Emmett, probably without realizing it, set up a "Schrodinger's cat" scenario, a concept mentioned earlier in the book.

Dan Masciello If that was the case, why didn't Emmett force the same choice on himself and Billy? It was Wooley's money and he left a third to Duchess. Emmett just screwed up.
