The whole point of the scene was not to demonstrate Steinbeck's understanding of the female anatomy. You make a valid point, but you are too concerned about what is possible. It was meant to be an ending that left the readers with chills, and if that's what you had, then he succeeded. I can surely understand you frustration, but this ending is one of the most horrifically beautiful endings to a book that you will likely ever read, which is what is should be.
