I agree about all of this, especially the ending with the mother. I've been in therapy for multiple years and I was no where near as troubled as her mother is. It's unrealistic to think that just because she's "trying" to get better that it will happen that easily. There was one sign of Aiden's problems when Aleisha heard him crying in his room.
Aleisha mentions how her mother would have periods of "normalcy" for months at a time. That is when she would work. When we are first introduced to the situation, Aleisha says "there hadn't been a proper spiral for a while." I was also under the impression that her husband leaving didn't cause her spiraling, but that he left because of it. And I don't think the ending was meant to show that Leilah suddenly recovering. Aleisha's reading to her brought them closer together and helped calm her. Until then, only Aidan could calm her. Aidan's overwhelming stress and depression are indicated throughout his interactions with his sister. He calls her to ask her to come home and says "he needs her" which he never says. He has a prescription filled for himself. And I'm not sure he was actually working so many times. He may have been just needing to get away.
