When you extract a sentence like this, I get your point, but if you read carefully, you understand their lifestyle and what they are fighting for, it is very clear that they are against animal slaughter, therefore, they are vegetarian/vegan.
I suspect a 13 year old will understand far more of this book than us old folk. :-)
