Nina Laurin I was going to write the same thing. It's even mentioned earlier that if the simulation hypothesis is true, it would have been easy to fix the glitch (the 2nd plane) so it's likely a test that humanity will pass or fail. When the 3rd plane is shot down, we failed the test, and the universe gets Ctrl-A Del.

Carol Katarsky Agree with what Nina said, although I also found myself wondering if the third plane was the "original" (going back to the photocopier hypothesis) and therefore once that's shot down, the simulation self-destructs/is shut down.
In theory, shooting down the March or June planes would not have done the same.
