Martha Huntley I think it refers to family relationships and influences - bad and good - that continue on. I think the book was more about family dynamics with tennis just being the lens through which we see them in this book.

Mrs. Read I agree. The proverb is centuries old. It’s a pre-DNA way of saying genetics is destiny. The theme of children fighting to escape their origins is a common one in literature.
