I think it could be surmised that Heathcliff and Catherine DID make out and probably even had sex, but that it just wasn't done to admit or write about such a thing at the time this book was written. Two people who'd never done more than hold hands, if that, could not have that kind of passion for each other. I mean, Cathy literally died of a broken heart and Heathcliff's life was a torment to him after that. That kind of suffering doesn't result from uncomsummated love..
