Aaron Wolfson What is the meaning of the term "Islamicate?" I hadn't heard it before.

Alex Linschoten It was coined by Marshall Hodgson. If you google his name and the term you should find a lot of stuff on that. It's basically a way to get around the unsatisfactory term "Islamic"

Aaron Wolfson Wow, I will need to read him, he sounds great. I did not know the term was unsatisfactory---I'll stop using it.

Aaron Wolfson Although it occurs to me, the term "Jewish" is a similar one, referring to a sociocultural complex in addition to just a religion. I wonder why that one seemed to work out OK, but "Islamic" ends up being thought of as only a religion term.

Alex Linschoten Yeah, you want to read a 3-part history called "The Venture of Islam". It's really wonderful, and he begins the first volume by explaining why he uses various terms/coinages.
