It's still a good book, for the most part. If you liked 11/22/63, you'll be into this, even though it's not about time travel. He was just on Cobert this week, and we found out he's currently living in Florida. Talk about an unhealthy connection to Trump ...
I too, am not thrilled about the Trump references...can you imagine the hullabaloo if authors did derogatory references to Biden?? Oh, well, I still like King's books and just try to ignore politics in any books...I read to get away from the real world as much as possible!
Yes, I spent $14.99, so I read the whole book. The contrived plot device at the end, which was entirely unlikely and just plain ludicrous had me LAUGHING. How ridiculous! I don't want to spoil the Freddy Krueger moment, so I won't say more. Did not like the book.
I almost Un-Followed King on Twitter because King doesn't stop with Trump. Remarks like, "If I have to see Mitch McConnell's jowls for another term...." Thank you Susan, I am so over the uselessness of continuing with the mean-mouth topic of Trump I'll save my money and buy a different book
No crying or Trump worshipping here. Just sick and tired of political bitching in general. I agree, it's King's book. He can write what he wants. But if I find the politics irritating as hell, I can say so.
So, you're upset that a book King wrote while Trump was in office, and that takes place in 2019 while Trump is in office, references him? How is that so bizarre?
Not upset. Irritated. I'm sick of the political bitching in King's books. If you don't share my point of view, that's fine. I will say that I attended a Stephen King and Owen King book discussion for Sleeping Beauties in 2017. At the outset of the "fireside chat" type discussion, Stephen King stated that he was warned by his wife Tabitha to refrain from talking about politics, because that's not the subject of the Sleeping Beauties discussion. When he said that, there were good-natured laughs from the audience, and much applause. If his wife has to suggest to him that he's talking about politics too much - then maybe he's talking about politics too much.
Honestly, it sounds like you may not have read much King. He has had quick political comments all through his writing, its nothing new. He regularly has characters comment on the current political situation during the time period of the book. You can tell he has an interest in politics, well before the last administration. I just find it interesting that all of a sudden it has become an issue for some people.
Bobby, I've been reading SK all my life. I've attended multiple of his live signings and book discussions. I've been to his house in Maine (number one fan style), I've got a significant collection of signed first editions. I've got a wooden sign with a quote of his hanging over my desk, for god's sake. I hold a B.A. in Literature (for whatever that's worth). I recently re-read all of his early books. The political vitriol present in his current works is not as predominant in his early works. Not by half. But again, I reiterate. I find the TRUMP references IRRITATING. Not "an issue". Not "upsetting". If you don't find those references irritating, fine. Your point of view is valid. My point of view is valid as well.
Sorry dear, but it does sound as if it is an issue for you. Probably because you are a Trump supporter, is my best guess.
You complain about people going on and on about the 2016 election, when all I hear every day is #45 and his supporters spout nonsense about the 2020 election. The irony is not lost on me.
Sour grapes. Of course he references Trump. It’s topical in the book. No one really wants to be reminded of his horror show of an administration, least of all his supporters who are complicit. Suck it up.
Maybe you should look for writers who are ultra-conservative or have racist pro-nazi ideology. You may be more comfortable reading their writings.
He mentions Trump a few times, same way he hints at the pandemic that's still in the future and gives us so much detail about Billy's time in Iraq. It's called CONTEXT. And like others have pointed out, King often places his stories very firmly in very specific times with explicit points of reference. It's part of his style.
did you check the dates of the writing at the end of the book? I find references to the current events during the time of the novel help keep it 'real'. Why are you so defensive about references to Trump?

Are you new to Stephen King? He has ALWAYS included current events, political references and pop culture references in his books based on when the story is taking place. It adds to the stories and characters. Maybe romance novels would be more your thing?
