That is the best explanation so far.
Only question - if Sasha/ Alex is one, why did Rosenthal, Charlie and Donokov wonder if it the other, making it look like both Sasha and Alex were existing, not any one.
Archer dedicates this book to Boris Nemtsov, a Russian physicist and outspoken critic of Putin. He was assassinated in 2015. A clue as to what's going on in the book. Alex/Sasha (merged in the beginning and ending as Alexander) will inevitably be assassinated.
