I wouldn't characterize Earthsea as (only) a children's book. Quite the contrary, I think the books develop over time to be profound and very adult. I didn't read them until I was 41, and they were deeply touching and challenging and emotionally complex in ways that "children's book"s are not.
Maybe - I didn't finish it. But I have read Astrid Lindgren's books, so I know about hardly being ble to read aloud, because the book is so moving. ;-)
