Ugh. I totally agree with you. I hated all the characters, except for Peter. I hated Elle.
Which one was Elle again?! Haha. So many pointless, unlikeable characters and so many words to essentially end up where we started. I borderline hated this book and felt it was mis-sold... the plot of an 'affair' was totally overridden by abuse and incest. I hated that I was blindsided by this. Ugh.
Haha, I kind of felt the same way. Certainly the reader was supposed to buy-in to Peter or Jonas. The soundtrack of "Torn Between Two Lovers" kept running through my mind. It's hard to be gorgeous like Elle and have two handsome men in love with her! With all the detail giving and story telling, what was Wallace's job, other than to be married and divorced and take lovers? Did the father just get grey rocked for the rest of time. Hopefully if the author types another book she'll learn nuance and work with better editors.
I agree that it's deliberately ambiguous. However, I see Elle's narcissism as a factor of her mother's neglect. (Google the two) BTW, while her mother never listened to what Elle said (note how many times she tried to tell her mother about Conrad), Jonas heard it with fierce protectiveness.
