message 1: by Corri (new)

Corri I think she chose Jonas, but completely agree that he was creepy and predatory. He seemed to become a stalker at the end.

message 2: by Afterwards (new)

Afterwards I think she chose Jonas. I think Jonas was under-written & at the end misleading since nothing else in the book previous to that last scene with him suggestted he was creepy. Very uneven control of her material

message 3: by Corri (new)

Corri Underwritten is a good description. There was nothing about their brief teenage relationship that screamed soulmates to me. The had a typical connection for 2 summers, had a bonding trauma, then he went to summer camp and didn’t see her again for years. The relationship seemed flimsy.

Afterwards It's baffling that this book is being praised so highly. She's well connected & powerful so I imagine much smoke blowing up the ... is what's going on. Some good, well written bits but mostly it could have done with a lot more work before publication. I liked Jonas & Anna but they had the least airtime of all the characters

Corri A good screenwriter could turn it into a decent movie, and maybe those were her goals since she is a producer. I see it more as a steamy thriller, though, with Jonas going from sweet childhood protector to adult stalker, showing up wherever she is in NY, breaking into her cottage to plant the ring, leaving notes, etc. I felt like the scene in the friend’s kitchen towards the end of the book was more creepy passion than love. I don’t think he ever loved her...he was obsessed with her.

Jacqui I'm so glad you said that. I found Jonas creepy in his possessiveness. There was something I didn't like about him by towards the end of the book

ARLENE L SHE STAYS WITH PETER

message 8: by Juliana (new)

Juliana I want to believe she chose Peter. I totally agree with you on all points. She loves her children and her husband. I want to believe she chose them over Jonas. ESPECIALLY after going through all her parents bullshit.

message 9: by Sally (new)

Sally I think she chose peter, but Jonas appeared eager to be in the blue shirt in the bushes kind of side action. She had been through so much that she knew what divorce would mean to her kids. She left the ring there as a sign of I’m going off to be naughty but I’ll be back to swoop it up before anyone wakens or say she lost it. Remember she had just had a moment of I caught you from Peter but she explained her way through. This must have given her the fortitude to go see Jonas.

message 10: by Afterwards (new)

Afterwards Fair enough but what a convoluted set of mental gymnastics the reader is expected to do to achieve this understanding. It's a badly written ending.
Many parts of the book are badly written - some are well written, it's uneven and not worthy of the amount of attentino it's getting.
