I was also disappointed. Would Nick really have had a Tammy Wynette moment, and stood by his woman, no matter how psychopathic he suspects she might be (and he had every reason to suspect it was more than a little)? That would be a bit like Clarice Starling (in 'Silence of the Lambs') marrying Hannibal Lecter because she wanted to settle down and raise a family. I'm guessing the author borrowed the plot of 'Presumed Innocent' (where the wife also frames the husband for having an affair), but ran out of time (or motivation) to come up with a better ending.
