Liz Nichols Great question. She seemed to be genuinely happy with her memories. Especially during this pandemic, it is interesting how Ishiguro always focuses on the importance of memory to our emotional state (can be happy/pleasant or not).

Kristin Meredith The boxes seemed to indicate how Klara was absorbing new information. The more complex and confusing to her, the more boxes. The Mother's face frequently created many boxes and they were compartmentalizing areas that conflicted in emotion, just like the explanation the Manager had with Klara about the couple who embraced in the street, showing sad and happy feelings simultaneously. The Open Plan room also featured boxes a lot- the modular furniture was reconfigured frequently which made it difficult for Klara to memorize the room to know how to walk about and keep her "balance." This is symbolic also of the complexities of people displaying changes of emotion in one setting. I loved the symbolism in this and plan to reread to really soak in the bird references too. So much to unpack!

Johnrh (1) Ambiguous indeed. My Kindle search reveals:

‘Well, something like that. My mother and I both thought that maybe Atlas Brookings, being a generous and liberal college…’ ‘Sufficiently generous and liberal to be open to all students of high caliber, even some who haven’t benefited from genetic editing.’

Ishiguro, Kazuo. Klara and the Sun (p. 243). Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.

and...

‘Now consider this, Rick. Atlas Brookings believes there are many talented kids out there, just like you, who for reasons economic or otherwise never received the benefits of AGE.

Ishiguro, Kazuo. Klara and the Sun (p. 245). Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.

Advanced Genetic Editing or Engineering perhaps?

RE: (4) Klara is definitely preoccupied with people being lonely, and early on, she notes that AFs can have fear. About objects in the world, she is downright unknowledgeable. Is AI supposed to learn EVERYTHING?!
