Rafal Is it a valid question, though??? In your comment you used word "gratuitous" and that should be operative word here. If this or "sex talk" is done without reason then book is just badly written and I would stop reading it base on low writing quality, not swearing. However sometimes plot and characters require swearing and omitting it will feel very artificial and out of place.

James Cobbett Yes Rafal, it is a perfectly valid question. You seem pretty bent out of shape by everyone defending the OP, and have commented over and over trying to defend the belittling and insulting of the OP. All they asked is if there was swearing, as they don't like to read that. There was no judgement from them, they didn't say swearing shouldn't be in books or that swearing should be censored, they just wanted information so they could make a decision. You seem to be the one doing all of the judging, trying to force your opinion that swearing is fine. Get a grip.

Rafal If OP finish on question alone maybe I could agree with you however second sentence was " His second book was so filled bad language that I had to stop reading it". Did you missed that part? You said that there was no judgment - if saying that Artemis was filled with so much profanity (which, as person who actually read that book I can attest is simply not true) that OP HAD to stop reading it is no judgment then... agree to disagree.
Language is a living thing and swearing (which I think I use very rarely) is part of this. Some books not need that, but in some it is important part of the fabric of storytelling, helping to immerse you in world where action take place. If someone judge book by number of swear words and not even WHEN and WHERE they were used is no better than someone who...judge book by the cover.

James Cobbett Again, you are picking a fight where there isn't one. They said they stopped reading because of the swearing. They didn't say 'there shouldn't be swearing'. It's a big difference. They are not saying don't swear, they are saying I don't want to read swearing. It is a personal preference. You seem to very aggressively want to force your opinion on anyone that doesn't want to read swearing, commenting on several posts about it, like everyone is trying to prevent swearing. Even in your response to me, you felt like you needed a second paragraph to justify swearing, when I also haven't said that swearing should be censored - I didn't give an opinion, you're trying to pick a fight. I don't see why you have such a big problem with someone not wanting to read a book, you don't need to force your personal preferences on everyone (over and over, on multiple posts).

Rafal So when OP says "His second book was so filled bad language that I had to stop reading it" it's no judgment? Or when comment I commented on, from Ricky says " I have put down books due to gratuitous swearing or non stop sex talk as it just made the book, well, meh." it's also not a judgement??? You know - for someone who preach about people being aggressive or forcing your opinion on others you doing great job too. But don't worry - wont waste any more time on you :-) Peace.

James Cobbett You are missing the fine line between sharing an opinion and telling someone their opinion is wrong. All these people have said they don't like reading books with swearing in, but they didn't say that the books should change or be banned, or that no one else should enjoy them. You have come on here to tell everyone their opinion is wrong, and that swearing is fine, and not to be so fussy or whatever. So yes, those people are not judging OTHER PEOPLE, they are judging books and expressing their opinions. You are judging people and their opinions and telling them they are wrong. By all means feel free to express a polite opinion that you enjoy swearing - that's fine. But everyone else has as much a right to an opinion as you. I actually happen to agree with the points made about swearing being part of life and appropriate in certain situations, but no one on here has argued against that - the OP just wanted to know if there was swearing so they could make a decision, they didn't need belittling or a lecture.

Ricky Whoa, I took a mini break from the internet. I have been missing out. Thanks James for your input here :)

James Cobbett Hey Ricky, no worries. I wouldn't normally get involved, but I guess it was a slow morning for me :) OP asks a simple question and suddenly it's like they're organising a book burning!

Karin Here's an answer :) I read this recently and there was no gratuitous swearing the way there was with on on-earth female character in The Martian (I read The Martian in 2013 so don't remember her name). I liked it better than Artemis, which has been my least favourite. I rounded The Martian up to 5 stars, this one down to 4, but only 3 stars (barely) for Artemis.
