I agree but think it's worse (i.e. more damning of all of us as humans) than that. We DO abandon super important people in our lives all the time. Housekeepers, nannies, and other servants are a perfect example, and Ishiguro has made them his protagonists again and again. What about the doctors and nurses who saved our family members during a medical crisis? or therapists who helped us in a crisis, etc. I'm not even saying we are evil or wrong always, but we do tend to avoid examining our feelings and actions around these things, in order to move on.
