Terry Mulcahy Good points. I liked The Martian a lot personally. One of the main reasons was his approach to seemingly insurmountable problems. Despite a considerable number of years under my belt, I am still sometimes freaked out (intimidated) by the sheer number of problems I need to tackle, or one that seems complicated. As a mature human being, I soon settle down and start on the project or problem, one little bit at a time. It's the only way sometimes, for me to get things done, like replacing my front door when it broke apart - there were so many options, some very expensive, and others more complicated than I needed. The door couldn't be repaired due to pet door cutouts that had destroyed the integrity of the dowels and glued-in tongue and groove construction. It had almost completely come apart in my hand upon opening it one time. I have a fresh door now. I cut it tot he necessary length yesterday, but I need to knock off 1/4 inch off of the width. It is too small to attempt with a circular saw with a 1/8 inch cutting notch, so I have planed the corners of one side, in preparation for planing the entire thickness of the lock stile side. I still have to solve the problem of holding it in place without a vise. Even just planing the 45° angles moved the whole heavy door around on my sawhorses. The metal sawhorses I have are built so I cannot get a clamp around them and the door, and I really need to plane this thing while it is standing vertically on its lock stile edge. I can brace the door against the banco around my fireplace. I just realized that I've seen something before like what I need. I will pop over to the hardware store again. However, today is the Memorial Day holiday, so I'm not sure the store is open. Well, that's easily checked. Anyway, although it's a minor project, I'm not really a carpenter, I just act like one at times. I'll get it down. I need this door to fit snugly, yet not oo snugly. It's 1 3/4" thick, made of dense fir, so it is quite heavy and difficult to manhandle, but I'm managing. I'm enjoying the process.

Serewyn "I will agree with others though and say that swearing by characters is not a reason to put the book down". For you and them. For the OP it is and there is nothing wrong with that.

Rafal But saying by him: "His second book was so filled bad language that I had to stop reading it." is simply not true. Contrary to OP I actually read Artemis and language was definitely not worse than language which you will hear in any TV/Movie about space colony/criminals/heist etc.

Alex Lol I don't think he knows teachers then. The middle/high school teachers I know (and I was one) swear like sailors outside the classroom.

Jean Wait, so swearing or not swearing can be part of characterization?! Mind blown! /s People can read or refuse to read whatever they want. And I can continue to be completely baffled by people who refuse to read books because of swearing. I just don’t get it.
