I was thinking the same thing, and yet after just finishing Memoirs of a Geisha, Emily is not all that different. They lost their father. They are lonely and looking for someone to love them. I saw him more as a father figure although I know he didn't see himself that way. And yet this was set nearly 100 years ago and it may have been accepted then.
