Denise This is very insightful! I love it

Tamara I think this is the best explanation for what I didn't quite understand about the ending

Judy Lindow Tamara - Thanks! I go back and reread sometimes as there are some interesting ideas ; )

Liam Magheroni I was looking for more discussion of the theological angle, so am glad you brought up "her God". It seems to me that Klara is the only one with a God, and the only one who prays. Moreover, she seems to have come to prayer on her own, based on rudimentary beliefs and knowledge of what was good for her. She believes her agree with the Sun must be kept secret, for a variety of reasons, only one being that the Sun could be offended and take back the miracle. Evidence that her prayers and sacrifices are answered seems compelling, since the actual entering of the sun into the room is coincident with healing, and she somewhat knew this would happen it seems. Thus, she seems to qualify as a saint, willingly martyred.

Judy Lindow Some interesting ideas. You made me think of how much of culture right now is secretive about our spiritual/religious beliefs (if we're outside of our community) ... people want things 'secular', scientific, to not offend, to not exclude, or whatever. And so when we have this spiritual craving we're quiet about it ... of course Klara is in many ways born from her designer ... so perhaps she is a twin to/a reflection of her living creator somewhere. Yes, she could qualify as a saint ... and perhaps that was what the humans designing her 'need' - to be loved and protected by miracles and saints (and not just science).

Liam Magheroni I was thinking perhaps the implication was that a robot designed to be loyal and compassionate, and thus sentient at some level, will have a tendency to become theistic on its own - an unintended consequence.

M.W Interesting theory. However perhaps you are slightly rederectinging the narative to suit your own "religion or politics " perhaps feelings much like the Dr Capaladi and the Mother and forcing what relevance you want to see rather then what is there. I interpret this book as an objective observation of the disjointed interactions of our society with each other, with our environment, with our family and creating elitism and the goal for more doesn't equal more. Also the casual disregard of that around us as a tool to serve. Animals, people, love, power and creation are not stepping stones. They are parts of like that deserve and require respect. If the ultimate goal is to be better on the outside and use everything and anyone around themselves together there. Integral portions of being human and being alone are lost.

Judy Lindow No comment. Thanks for your thoughts : )

message 9: by Leah (new)

Leah There is no parallel between the genetic modification alluded to in the book and deciding whether or not to get a vaccine to reduce the spread of illness during a pandemic, aside from the one that you created and wish to see. Theoretically, genetically modifying DNA isn't "contagious", so choosing to or not to doesn't put anyone else but yourself at risk. Choosing to be vaccinated is a completely different concept. I agree completely with M.W. You are redirecting the narrative to suit your own beliefs, and it's a huge stretch.

message 10: by Leah (new)

Leah It says more about poverty/class divide than "medical segregation".

message 11: by Judy (new)

Judy Lindow I disagree.

message 12: by Grace (new)

Grace I also disagree with you, Judy. If anything, we're getting further away from COVID mandates but social stratification and loss of upwardly mobility is becoming worse.

Judy Lindow Last time I looked - about a year ago - my post had well over this many likes - so now I don't have 30-50 and bill gates - who doesn't mention any current day parallels has over 600? haha - makes sense - Goodreads now has a link to Amazon as one of upfront features.
