how about either it coming in within a story about the current peoples. like antonio reminiscing because of it somehow being brought up or something that made him remember, wish for her/that different life or feel guilt on how it went down. or nick wanting to know more while thinking about him being at that stage of procreating as well. as well as being a place where you can be commenting on the fact that werewolves are always the one parent type of life and the effects of no mom... and then of course the novelty of the twins who do in fact have an actual whole family. ... those kind of things or themes. so that the fact that it's a sad ending doesn't matter the same. the point isn't the ending but how it fits into the story as a whole and the character arcs.
