I realize that her parents both had unrealistic expectations for Lydia, but were they really "abominably unfair"? I think most parents have hopes and dreams for their children. When they are well-educated, parents usually have the expectation that their children will also go to good schools and accomplish a lot. I think is fairly normal......As a parent, I know that I've found that my kids have made choices that I would not make, but you love them and support them anyway. I don't think of Marily and James as being out of the ordinary.
I do think that Marilyn and James were surly "abominably unfair" they were horrible parents. Of course we all want things for our kids, but they went above and beyond, never once considering Lydia's wants or needs, and ignoring their other two children. I realize that Hannah is probably a daily reminder of Marilyns attempt at escape... but to completely ignore her while putting unrealistic expectations on Lydia is terrible. They were "abominably unfair"for sure
I agree totally! They were shocking self-centred parents. Marilyn was trying to live her life as a doctor (or hoped to one day) through Lydia and James was totally in denial about her lack of friends. They both ignored all the children’s needs and pushed their own agenda. Poor Hannah was an outcast. I also thought that having James locked in his office every day when Marilyn left the family home was cruel and selfish. It was ridiculously terrible!
Sharon, I agree. It was so sad how the patenys had their own agenda and neglected their children. I found myself angry all the way through at Marilyn. But I am a woman living in the 21st century with an education, a professional job, and two children. I should not judge Marilyn as I do not know what it was like being the only girl in a science class with men around me looking at me as an object. I think Ng is commenting on the time and what society was like at that time.
