Eric Is it possible for you to be any more ignorant? Rothfuss stopped caring about finishing the story/releasing book 3 and abandoned his fans that got him where he is. He hasn't even been working on it! Instead, he goes off and does video game projects, publicity circuits, and any and everything that makes him money. Making money and doing whatever he feels like is more important than finishing what he started. If that doesn't bother you, great, continue on continuing on. Other people are finding this understandably offensive.

Charles I don't like Capaldi.

Charles But I'm not a tourist.

Joseph Still crying about this Eric?

message 5: by Robert (new)

Robert Vivrette Lol at the fact you compare this to Tolkein's world. That is such an embarrassment to him. Rothfuss is a GREAT author, but "his world" pales in comparison to Tolkein's. Doing get me wrong, his writing is great, better than almost any IMO, but his story isn't the best.... so far. We shall see how it ends....

message 6: by Karen (new)

Karen Fitzpatrick Come on, he said he had written the entire trilogy before he published the first... A disgrace!

message 7: by Charles (new)

Charles I don't want a first draft of Doors of Stone, though, do you?

message 8: by Karen (new)

Karen Fitzpatrick BUT how many years should a final draft take? Come on, this is ridiculous. Loved the first two books but the only book I will ever buy from this author is the final part of trilogy, if it is ever published.... but not a chance of getting hooked on another false promise! Such a shame, a talented writer but has he gone off the rails?

message 9: by Charles (new)

Charles I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. For no other reason, though, than that I've never been in his position. I will say I don't recall him giving a statement saying that it would come out on a certain day in the past and making that promise false. I know he's been busy with worldbuilders, making tak, blogging, fatherhood, sorting out merchandise, negotiating for a simultaneous movie/tv series/video game deal, attending events, judging things and being part of a fantasy writing documentary. And this was before I stopped following him on social media some time last year, because I figured it's not worth the hassle. I suggest you do the same and leave it alone, for the sake of your own mental health. Also, there's a novella called *The Slow Regard of Silent Things* starring Auri, a short story called *The Lightning Tree* starring Bast, and an extremely short story which you might not believe is set in the same world, but is, called "How Old Holly Came to Be". He has also published two children's books for adults, the series is called *The Princess and Mr. Whiffle*, First book *The Thing Beneath the Bed*, second book *The Dark of Deep Below*. If you wanted something to fill your time. As for how long a draft should take, I would say "How good do you want it to be?"

Jared Amason Fellowship of the Ring: Publication July 29, 1954
Two Towers: Publication Nov 11, 1954
Return of the King: Publication Oct 20, 1955

In less than 15 months, all 3 books were published. Sure, the Hobbit was written in 1937, but it was a stand alone book.

message 11: by Charles (new)

Charles To be clear, Tolkien had already been world-building for most of his adult life, when The Hobbit, which he had written as a fun adventure story for his children, came to the attention of a publisher by a roundabout way. Then, even with the background and world in place, it took ten years (1948 according to wikipedia) to complete The Lord of the Rings. Then it took six years for it to be published.

Now, as stated above, Rothfuss had not actually finished the trilogy before the first book was published. He'd written a lot but it wasn't perfect, and it wasn't edited, and going off what's happened I'd say the majority of it went into Wise Man's Fear.

message 12: by Jared (new)

Jared Amason Tolkien also fought in two world wars and had a freaking career as a college professor! He used a typewriter, and it was nearly impossible to actually publish. I agree that Rothfuss can take his time, it is his book. However, people have the right to be extremely disappointed in the service he is providing. Do not compare him to one of the great writers of the 20th century. All Rothfuss has done is write one great book, one decent book, and spend the better part of the decade saying "don't ask me about book 3".

message 13: by Charles (new)

Charles Nah, we don't get to bitch about luxury goods. We especially don't get to bitch if we've never written and published.

message 14: by Jared (new)

Jared Amason Remember that next time you pay someone for a service and it takes 10 times longer than you were told. I actually wouldn't even be upset if he communicated at all. "Hey guys, sorry this is taking longer than expected, but I'm having writer's block or I'm struggling to wrap it all up". Any type of communication would be nice and appreciated by his fans. I get he gets tired of being asked, however... fans get tired of no communication.

message 15: by Charles (new)

Charles I don't recall being told a time? Also, this happened to me last week and I was fine with it.

message 16: by Dennis (new)

Dennis Patrick said the books were written, and the last one just needed editing. FYI it took Tolkien 12 years to complete lord of the rings which is not even a valid compairson considering the complexity and length of all books in that series. lol

message 17: by Charles (new)

Charles Where do you get that number from? Isn't the iea that the story was a natural progression to explain the language he was creating? When did he start creating the language? I know that the books weren't actually finished, he was still writing book two.

message 18: by Donna (new)

Donna Rothfuss is a great writer but this trilogy is not close to being as deep and developed as Tolkien's work. "The Lord of the Rings was published in three volumes over the course of a year from 29 July 1954 to 20 October 1955. " So Lord of the Rings was essentially 6 books and all published within less time what Rothfuss took between two books. I suspect we will never see book 3.

message 19: by Peter (new)

Peter The three books in the LotR trilogy were released between July of 1954 and December of 1955. You're talking pure 100% shit.

message 20: by Charles (new)

Charles He didn't fight in two world wars, if anyone was interested, at least according to Wikipedia. He was earmarked as a codebreaker for world war two then was told to go home and his services weren't needed.
