Trudi Cohen I agree. I also felt that Silas was kind of a dick. She chose to end in a fantasy of relationship/Job/book deal euphoria--where the key issues that seemed to me to be most interesting were the fact that her job did not pay enough for her health care and the financial "choices" she made would not support her in the future.

Kate Yes to all of this. I agree that the most interesting parts were the ones that highlighted or explored the tension between Casey's hopes and her reality. I don't suppose I'd wish that kind of conflict upon anybody in perpetuity (internalising again here... ha) but it's hard to take those movie-theatre/euphoria/everything-at-once endings seriously when you so rarely find such unblemished success in real life. I feel better to have got this out of my system, so thanks for being the unofficial book group.

Cynthia Exactly! I never come back and read reviews but I had to find out if it was just me being too dark and resisting the Lifetime movie ending. I was so excited when I read the first few pages, it’s so rare to have that feeling for a book it seems. To have all her problems resolve was a huge letdown for me. I read the last quarter of the book fast because I just wanted to finish it, I was disappointed. The golfing and then the chess- didn’t seem realistic at all to me. Among my many questions was why did she scatter her mom’s ashes among the goose poop? Have you seen goose poop? I felt while reading that at the end, she was really a lucky and charmed character - talented, beautiful, intelligent, amazing friends ..... It wasn’t the same book I started.

Jeff Casey was the dick, actually. A flake and miserable. The author tried to craft Silas's hesitancy to get involved, then fairly washed his hands when he learned she was also dating his teacher. That he was ditched by her, then gives in in the end was SO disappointing.
