Meagan Sullivan To me it there is an obvious comparison between this and Fifty Shades, and there is marital rape in this book. Claire tells Jamie "no stop you are hurting me" during sex midway through the book and does not stop. Then the next morning she says no to sex but he 'is not one to be told no.' That is the literal definition of rape. And it is presented as somehow romantic. There's your parallel with Fifty Shades, which is also liked by people who have this fantasy of being 'taken' by a big strong man, but don't seem to get that in their heads, they are consenting, but in the story, the character has not actually consented, and in real life, people in that exact same situation would be committing/experiencing rape.
