It took me two tries to finish Paretsky's "Black List' a couple of years ago... shifting time-lines, characters often leave me flummoxed. If you look at her earlier works, you can see how tightly woven the plot lines are. A mystery, by definition, needs to be condensed, anything that detracts from the action and the way the plot unfolds bogs things down. I had to work extra hard sticking with "Dead Land"... am so fond of her characters & the Chicago setting! But, when it comes to the mystery genre I've found lately that a couple of my fav authors seem to be dating their books by getting mired in current topics. Conan Doyle and Christie are still being read today because their themes are time-less.
