After reading the book the answer is not clear. It seems the father was totally oblivious to the reality of the town’s attitude.
Yeah that’s what it is. He didn’t want to believe that hate was that strong, so he didn’t believe it. He prolly went “oh hey my son isn’t being too great. Let’s send him to a town full of racist people. I mean they can’t be that bad right?”
The father is an idiot to not know how the town would react to his biracial son.
